TapDiary on Android Now Backs Up to Google Drive Automatically

Starting with TapDiary v2.2.0, you can back up your records to Google Drive automatically on Android too. Turn it on once and it backs up on its own, and when you switch phones you can pick up right where you left off.

iPhone has had iCloud Backup & Sync, but on Android the only option until now was exporting and importing a CSV file. The more months and years of records you have, the more worrying it is to lose or replace your phone. Now, on Android too, your records stay with you even when your phone changes.

Turn it on and stop thinking about it

You don't have to remember when to back up. Whether you record in the app or from the home screen widget, your records back up to Drive on their own.

The Auto Backup screen shows when the last backup happened, and if you want to back up right away, tap “Back up now”.

Pick up where you left off on a new phone

If you've switched phones, install TapDiary on the new one and turn on Auto Backup. If there's a previous backup in your Drive, TapDiary lets you know and asks what you'd like to do.

• If the new phone is empty: tap “Restore” and your buttons and records come right back.
• If the new phone already has records: choose “Merge” to keep the records from both this device and the Drive backup. You can also replace this device's data with the Drive backup, and before that happens, this device's records are saved to a separate file.

Your records are still yours

The backup is kept in a private app folder in your own Google Drive. Only TapDiary uses that space, so other apps can't see it, and no records are ever sent to TapDiary's servers.

You sign in with Google only when you turn on Auto Backup. If you don't use backup, keep using TapDiary as you do now, with no sign-up and no sign-in.

How to turn it on

1. Go to Settings > Auto Backup
2. Turn on “Google Drive Auto Backup”
3. Choose the Google account to back up to and allow access to Drive

Good to know

• To clear an old backup and start fresh, turn off backup, then tap “Delete Drive backup” on the same screen. The records on this device stay as they are.
• Exporting and importing records as CSV works just as before.

On iPhone, keep backing up to iCloud from Settings > Backup & Sync, as you do now.

The longer you've been recording, the more it matters not to lose it. Update to the latest version on Google Play and turn on Auto Backup.
